3 Useful Types Of Drug Addiction Recovery Therapy

Rebecca Pena

Drug addiction recovery programs contain different types of treatments. For example, a program might include a detox process and various educational programs to address your addiction and health-related factors such as nutrition.

As part of your recovery process, you are likely to have some therapy. While every program has its own therapeutic options, you are most likely to be offered one or more of the following three therapies. Read on to learn more about how these therapies work and how they will help you overcome your drug problems.

1. Individual Therapy Sessions

Individual therapy works on a one-to-one basis. You have sessions on your own with a therapist.

Often, you'll have some kind of talk therapy here. Talk therapy helps you untangle psychological and behavioral problems. For example, it can help you work out why you became addicted to drugs.

Behavioral therapy sessions also work well during the drug detoxification process. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy can help you find ways to fight your addiction and change your current behavior. Motivational interviewing can help you form and accept achievable goals to prevent future relapses.

If you understand yourself and your addiction, then you get extra help during the detoxification process. You are more likely to stay clean for longer.

2. Group Therapy Sessions

Some programs also ask you to join group therapy sessions during your treatment. You may have to do this even if you also agree to individual therapy.

Group sessions bring together multiple people with similar problems. They can be a valuable way of getting support and non-judgmental validation at this difficult time.

Groups are led by therapists or counselors. However, the members of the group do most of the therapeutic work. You get to share your experiences and feelings with people who have been through the same things as you. This gives you a sense of belonging that can make it easier to fight your addiction.

The relationships you build in a group can also give you more encouragement to stay clean. The group wants every member to conquer their problems.

3. Family Therapy Sessions

In some cases, you might have some family therapy during your treatment. Here, members of your family will join you for some joint therapy sessions.

This type of therapy can be useful. You will see how your addiction has affected those close to you. They will gain a deeper understanding of your problems. Hopefully, this will bring you all closer together and give you extra support once your formal detoxification program has ended.

About Me
Exploring Counseling Sessions For Parents

Hey everyone, my name is Lori Grffin. When my son was born, I was completely unprepared for the difficulties of raising a sensory deprived child. The stress of trying to parent a difficult child definitely takes its toll. Eventually, I had a nervous breakdown and ended up enrolling in individual counseling sessions. The counseling appointments helped me work through the emotions generated while coping with fits and meltdowns from my son. I emerged from each session better prepared to provide my son with the support he needed. I also learned how to pay attention to how I was feeling during the process. I created this site because I want to share the benefits parents receive from going to counseling sessions. Thank you.
